Is Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Auto Insurance Coverage Really Needed?
Answer: Yes! Make sure you have underinsured and uninsured motorist auto insurance coverage (this is coverage for injuries when you’re hit by a motorist with no or not enough insurance).
We have had to give bad news to numerous clients who do not have this coverage. We hate telling them the person who hurt them had no liability car insurance, or had the state minimum, which is only $25,000.
The only way you can protect yourself against a driver who has no or not enough liability coverage is to purchase as much uninsured (UM) or underinsured (UIM) coverage as you can afford. A lot of people don’t even know what this coverage is – until they are in a situation where an underinsured driver hits them.
Pull out your declarations page and take a look at how much you have. We’ve seen policies as high as $500,000 and some insurance companies offer an umbrella that specifically covers UIM. Ask your insurance person about it.
On the liability side, make sure you have enough of this insurance so that if you seriously hurt someone, you can take care of them AND protect your personal assets.
