Each car would absorb roughly what it would if it struck a rigid barrier at 60 mph. The impact would still be catastrophic but not doubled. Somewhere, physics went out the window, and the myth stuck, which is a shame, because the real reason head-on crashes cause so many fatalities is more useful.

Why Wyoming’s Roads Produce Them

The severity and rate of fatality in frontal crashes come down to physics. The frequency comes down to geography.

What a Frontal Impact Does to a Body

The engine and firewall get driven backward into the footwell. Fault in a head-on crash can look obvious, but it often isn’t. The two people who know what happened are frequently not able to say.

So, the road itself testifies. Gouge marks in the pavement show where the vehicles met. This is usually the single most important fact in the file.
